Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0: “The text entered exceeds the maximum length”

When you promote an e-mail message by clicking Track in CRM in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0, you receive the following error message:

The text entered exceeds the maximum length.

Additionally, the following error message is logged in the Event Viewer:

0x80044331 A validation error occurred. The length of the messageid attribute of the email entity exceeded the maximum allowed length of 100.

This problem occurs because the e-mail entity contains a long subject. However, the current size of the messageid attribute is 100.

To resolve this problem, change the maximum length of the messageid attribute of the E-mail entity. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Settings  click Customization, click Customize Entities, and then double-click E-mail.
  2. In the Entity: E-mail page, click Attributes.
  3. Double-click messageid.
  4. In the Maximum Length field, type 200.
  5. Click Save and Close.
  6. In the Entity: E-mail page, click Actions, and then click Publish.
  7. Click Save and Close.
